My Byron Couch Mattress assessment — why I selected Koala over Crate & Barrel and LoveSac, the way it feels to sleep on, and every little thing to know before you purchase.
I’m excited to inform you about my new loft couch mattress / lounge sofa! This publish has been some time within the making as a result of I wanted to really reside with this sofa earlier than I may inform you extra about it.
The brief model: I wanted a queen couch mattress for my new loft, I refused to purchase something with springs, and after scoping out the couch mattress market, I landed on the Byron Couch Mattress by Koala. And I’m genuinely thrilled with it! Listed here are all the main points about it.
Byron Couch Mattress Evaluate
My loft wanted a comfy sofa that would pull double responsibility as a visitor room. I needed a comfy spot to learn or nap or hearken to somebody taking part in the piano that I may flip into a cushty queen mattress at night time for friends.
I have already got a queen-sized couch mattress in my basement that’s reminiscence foam and really snug (in response to each my dad and 13 yr olds who’ve stayed the night time!), so I knew I needed one other reminiscence foam fashion. I despise sleeping on springs and didn’t desire a metallic pull-out couch that all the time makes me suppose I’m going to lose a finger.
That one requirement narrowed the sphere. I regarded on the reminiscence foam couch beds from Crate & Barrel and LoveSac on a visit to Quick Pump in Richmond and the $7,000–$8,000 value tags had my jaw on the bottom. Lovely sofas, however not occurring at that value. After all throughout this time Instagram had a intestine feeling I used to be sofa purchasing and stored placing Koala in my feed! At ~$2,000 with good evaluations, I made a decision it was the one to purchase.
Byron Couch Mattress verses the Wanda Sectional
Koala really makes two couch beds I significantly thought of: the Byron and the Wanda, which is a sectional and sits somewhat greater off the bottom. I went backwards and forwards, however in the end determined I didn’t want that a lot sofa for my loft. The Byron is smaller, cheaper, and the fitting scale for the room as soon as I put the storage cupboard in there. In case you have an even bigger house to fill or desire a true sectional really feel, the Wanda is value a glance. And I’d think about getting it for my lounge if/after I determine to improve down right here.

How It’s Made: Supplies, Cloth, and Development
The body is constructed from FSC-certified timber, which simply means the wooden is sourced from responsibly managed forests. As a substitute of a standard metallic pull-out mechanism with springs, you actually flip the underside cushion out onto a roll-out platform. No bars, no springs, fingers in tact!
The mattress half is what Koala calls Kloudcell, and it’s their proprietary foam layer designed to really feel like an precise mattress. There’s additionally one thing referred to as Zero Disturbance™ expertise in-built, which is supposed to isolate movement so in the event you’re sharing the mattress, you’re not getting jostled awake all night time (you already know the bowling ball commercials!) Additionally: the mattress topper zips off and is absolutely washable, which makes me really feel higher about many individuals sleeping on it.
There are two ranges of cloth:
- Basic materials (100% recycled polyester) — water resistant and machine cleanable
- Luxe materials (a polyester and recycled polyester boucle mix) — somewhat extra texture, a barely greater value level
I really preferred the look of the Basic greater than the Luxe, in order that was a straightforward selection. It’s delicate but feels excessive finish – like a pleasant linen-blend really feel. The covers are detachable and washable (I’m undecided they’re dryer secure although.)
Inexperienced or Pink?
I nearly went with the pink! As a result of this loft is my house, I needed it to be mild, ethereal, and female. And because it’s not a foremost flooring consuming sofa, I didn’t suppose stains could be as huge of a priority. However the pink is within the Luxe cloth that I didn’t love the feel of, and after I thought long-term a couple of piece of furnishings this dimension that I plan to maintain for years, I talked myself into the Forest Stroll as an alternative — one thing that can age effectively and blend with no matter else I convey into the room. (My pal Ellen additionally argued that the inexperienced matches the mountain view higher in any case!) I’m getting my pink repair a distinct manner: these pink throw pillows and a blush rug.
Consolation: How It Feels As A Couch
I used to be terrified to purchase a sofa with out sitting on it first. However their web site does an amazing job with movies displaying folks sitting at completely different heights and the way far again they sink. The Byron has the proper sink-in feeling — it’s delicate with out being unsupportive. I like that the seat is barely declined so that you lean again as an alternative of falling ahead. I additionally love that the arms are tall sufficient to really relaxation your head on, which sounds small however makes an enormous distinction in the event you’re taking a nap up right here!
Consolation: How It Feels as a Mattress
The entire motive I purchased this sofa is that it wanted to double as a legitimately snug visitor mattress. Whereas I’ve not spent a complete night time on it, laying on it for about an hour was pretty.
One trustworthy con: the mattress sits fairly low to the bottom, which may very well be somewhat more durable for an older visitor to stand up and down from. However that very same low profile makes it excellent for youths and toddlers.
Supply and Meeting
I paid an additional $170 for the meeting service, and it was value each penny. The price covers meeting, however an even bigger a part of the worth is the haul-away and recycling of all of the packing containers. The Byron ships in a number of giant packing containers, and never having to haul them upstairs or to the recycling heart was nice.
Right here’s the one factor I’d flag: the supply group advised me they’re technically solely supposed to hold furnishings up two flights of stairs. My loft is on the fourth flooring. They did it anyway, and I tipped them effectively for it, however that’s positively one thing to pay attention to. It’s bizarre as a result of the kind of individual paying for supply and meeting is commonly precisely the kind of individual with plenty of stairs to climb. In the event you’re in a walk-up or have a number of flights to get to the room, name forward and make sure with Koala that it’s okay.
Meeting itself took about an hour. It’s purported to be easy, however I used to be glad I didn’t should do it myself!
There’s a secret compartment within the again the place you possibly can retailer pillows or bedding, and I didn’t discover it for a month!
A Little About Koala
Koala is a Sydney-based furnishings firm and an authorized B Company. Additionally they contribute towards koala habitat conservation. Supplies are chosen with sustainability in thoughts first: FSC-certified timber, recycled and plant-based materials, and CertiPUR-US licensed foam. These have been all causes I made a decision to go for this couch.
Is the Byron Couch Mattress Price It?
Sure – it’s nice! It solved my actual downside: a cushty sofa for my loft that turns into a cushty queen mattress with zero springs. It’s a fraction of the worth of the Crate & Barrel and LoveSac choices I checked out, the material feels nice, and the FlipBed conversion is genuinely quick and straightforward.
My one piece of recommendation: look ahead to a sale. Koala runs promotions typically, so in the event you’re not in a rush, it’s value ready for a reduction before you purchase. And if in case you have greater than two flights of stairs between the truck and your door, give the supply group a heads up.
Store the Byron Couch Mattress right here. And if you need extra sq. footage, the Wanda sectional is value a glance too.
